Image to ASCII art

Turn a photo into a picture made of characters. You can copy the text or save it as a file or an image. Everything happens in the browser, files are not uploaded anywhere.

ASCII art turns a picture into text: dark areas of the image are drawn with dense characters, light ones stay almost empty. The result is a portrait or landscape made of letters, digits and signs that can be pasted into an email, a chat or code.

The width of the result is set in characters. The larger it is, the more detailed the picture, but the bigger the text. The height is calculated automatically, taking into account that a character is taller than it is wide, so the proportions of the source picture are preserved.

The character set changes the look of the picture. Simple gives a crisp, contrasty result, detailed conveys more midtones, blocks create a dense mosaic, and the zeros and ones mode looks like a screensaver from hacker movies.

Inversion suits light text on a dark background, for example in a terminal. Color output paints each character in the color of the corresponding pixel, so the picture stays recognizable even at a small width.

The finished text is copied with one button, saved to a TXT file or turned into a PNG picture. The conversion happens in the browser, and the source image is not sent anywhere. Photographs, logos and drawings all work.
