PPM converter
JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF are turned into PPM. The format is simple and uncompressed, so the files turn out large. The pixel size does not change. Everything happens in the browser, files are not uploaded anywhere.
PPM, or Portable Pixmap, belongs to the Netpbm family of formats, which includes PBM, PGM and PPM. These formats appeared in the late 1980s as an extremely simple way to exchange images between programs on different platforms.
A PPM file begins with a short header: the format identifier is given first, then the width, the height and the maximum color value. After the header come the red, green and blue values for each pixel. There is no compression, so the structure is easy to read and write.
Such simplicity makes the format convenient for educational tasks, research programs, command-line image processing and algorithm debugging. A developer can create or read a PPM file with a few lines of code, without using special libraries.
The price of simplicity is size. One pixel in the binary variant takes 3 bytes, and a photograph of medium resolution turns into a file of tens of megabytes. PPM provides no transparency, and most browsers do not show such files.
The PPM converter is suitable for preparing data for further processing in specialized programs. Transparent areas are replaced with a background, the image is written in the binary variant, and the size in pixels is preserved unchanged. After the page is closed, temporary data is removed from browser memory.
All calculations are performed locally in the browser. Data is not sent to a server, and finished files can be downloaded right after conversion. No registration or software installation is required. The page works on computers, tablets and smartphones.
