CUR is the mouse cursor file format in the Windows operating system. Its structure is very close to the ICO icon format, but it contains additional data: the coordinates of the hotspot, which determines exactly which pixel of the image is regarded as the tip of the pointer.

The hotspot, or active point, is of decisive importance. For an arrow it is located in the upper left corner, and for a crosshair or target it is in the center. If it is set incorrectly, clicks will happen not where the user sees the pointer.

A file can contain several images of different sizes. This is needed for correct display on screens with different pixel densities and when the interface scale is changed. The sizes used most often are 32, 48 and 64 pixels.

The CUR converter lets you create your own cursor from a JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF. It is enough to choose a picture, mark the sizes and specify the position of the hotspot. For a transparent background it is better to use PNG, so that the outline of the pointer stays neat.

If the source image is not square, it can either be fitted entirely into a square with transparent margins, or fill the square with the edges cropped. The first option keeps the picture complete, the second makes the object larger.

Finished cursors are installed through the Windows Control Panel in the mouse settings section. All calculations are performed in the browser, files are not sent to a server, and the result is available for download immediately after processing. It works in any modern browser.
