JXL converter and compression

JPG, PNG and WebP are turned into JXL (JPEG XL) with the quality you need. Many browsers cannot open JXL yet. The pixel size does not change. Everything happens in the browser, files are not uploaded anywhere.

JXL, or JPEG XL, is a next-generation image format developed by the JPEG group as the successor to the classic JPG. The standard was adopted in 2021 and 2022 and is designed for photographs, graphics and animation.

The format supports both lossy and lossless compression, a wide color gamut, high bit depth, transparency and a layered structure. A special feature is reversible recompression of existing JPEG files, which reduces their size by roughly one fifth without changing pixels.

JXL encodes and decodes quite fast, and its quality at low bitrates is usually higher than that of JPG. In efficiency the format is comparable to WebP and AVIF, but it preserves fine details and textures better.

Support remains the main limitation. Many browsers and applications cannot open JXL yet, so the format is used with caution for publishing on the internet. It suits archives, exchange between specialists and experiments with new technologies.

The JXL converter converts JPG, PNG and WebP and lets you choose the quality. The size in pixels stays the same. To check the result you will need a viewer that supports the format. After the page is closed, temporary data is removed from browser memory.

Encoding is performed in the browser by means of a loaded module, and files are not sent to a server. Results can be downloaded one by one or all at once. For large files it is advisable to have enough RAM.
