WebP converter and compression
JPG and PNG are turned into WebP. A finished WebP can simply be compressed: choose the quality and the file gets lighter. The pixel size does not change. Everything happens in the browser, files are not uploaded anywhere.
WebP is an image format developed by Google on the basis of the key-frame coding technology of the VP8 video codec. It was introduced in 2010 and is intended to reduce the weight of graphics on web pages without a noticeable loss of quality.
The format supports 2 modes. The lossy mode is used for photographs and usually creates files noticeably smaller than equivalent JPGs at the same visual quality. The lossless mode suits graphics and uses pixel prediction and entropy coding.
Unlike JPG, WebP allows transparency, including smooth transparency, even in lossy mode. The format can also store animation, which makes it an alternative to GIF with a much better ratio of quality to size.
The WebP converter is useful for owners of websites and online stores for whom page loading speed matters. A smaller image size reduces the amount of transferred data, improves speed metrics and lowers the load on mobile networks. Modern browsers open the format without extra extensions.
If the source file is already saved as WebP, it can simply be compressed: just choose a lower quality value and compare the size. For photographs, the range from 70 to 85 usually works well. The size in pixels stays the same.
Encoding is performed by the browser’s built-in tools on your device, so the images are not uploaded to a server. This speeds up the work and preserves confidentiality. If the browser does not support writing WebP, the page warns you and offers another format.
